How To Choose The Right 5th Wheel

With all the 5th wheel hitches out there, it's difficult to know how to choose the right 5th wheel hitch. Much of it has to do with the design, brand, and cost. Lets look at the main features that distinguish one 5th wheel hitch from another.

CAPACITY is the most important feature. You need to know how much your loaded 5th wheel trailer weighs in order to get you looking at the right selection of hitches.

MOUNTING STYLE > All 5th wheel hitches use a rail system but some of them mount under the bed of the box. Some hitches can be application sensitive using custom brackets to the make the installation cleaner, but the most common mounting style is the universal style.

SINGLE PIVOT VS. DOUBLE PIVOT > The 5th wheel head takes much of the impact of bumps & road irregulations when you're not driving your 5th wheel trailer down the road. To absorb the imact of this movement, all 5th wheel hitches have a degree of front to back pivot movement, some also have side to side movement.

SLIDER VS CROSSBED > A slider is a rail designed to install 5th wheel hitches for short box trucks (beds 6.5ft or shorter) which allows the hitch to slide back from its mounting position. When the trailer is turning it has enough clearance between itself and the back window of the pickup truck cab. The image below shows how this works:

Fifth wheel Slider Image

5TH WHEEL HITCH BRANDS: >  The top 5th wheel hitch brands are Reese, B&W Turnover Ball, Pullrite Towing Systems, and Curt Manufacturing.

Now that you have learned how to differentiate between the different styles and types, go ahead and choose the 5th wheel hitch that's right for you.

If you have any questions, concerns, or need help choosing a 5th wheel please call 800-300-4067.

Hello Kelly, since your GVWR is 18,000 lbs, you'd require a 5th Wheel Hitch rated for 18K.

Hi - as long as you are not loading the 5th wheel before transporting it you will be fine, but once loaded it would be easy to creep over the 16k limit of your fifthwheel hitch and it would no longer be safe. If you believe you are going over that limit and would like assistance in choosing a new fifth wheel please let us know! We just need the year/make/model/cab style/bed length on your truck and we can price out some options for you. You can reach us at info@hitchweb.com or 1-800-300-4067

Hi Laura! His truck should definitely be capable of towing 10k - our lowest rated fifth wheels are 15/16K. But we do recommend checking the truck owners manual or by calling into a Chev dealership with your VIN number. Before we can select a fifth wheel setup (or gooseneck!) we just need to know the length of your bed. Goosenecks are more common for horse trailers but a lot of people will use them for multiple applications. Our B&W turnoverball would be one of our most popular gooseneck setups. If you can reply back with your bedlength here, or just send the details to info@hitchweb.com we're happy to price you out several options! Thank you! Hitchweb Team

Hi I have a 2007 (i think. I don't have owners manual.) Jazz by Thor 30' fifth wheel and my boyfriend has a 1985 3/4 ton chevy. He thinks my trailer (while empty) weighs around 10000lbs. Is his truck capable of pulling my trailer and what kind of hit h do i need? He says I need a goose neck hitch but I honestly have no clue if he has any clue of what he is talking about.

Hi Ed - Congrats on the new fifth wheel! If you're sure your loaded weight will never go over 15k then a 15k fifth wheel will be sufficient. Generally when we price them out we generally recommend 16k as a minimum just in case you decide to upgrade your fifth wheel in the future or add something like a cargo basket to the rear for extra storage (these can be used just for gear or as motorcycle/scooter carriers). If you'd like to discuss this in more detail we'd be happy to price out a few options for you! Just contact us at info@hitchweb.com or call 1-800-300-4067 Thank you! -Hitchweb Team

Hi Josh - if you have the turnoverball by B&W we recommend part# RVK3405 - this 20K fifth wheel slider is designed to mount using the existing hole in your bed from the turnoverball. Unless you have something like a sidewinder (a king pin extender than sets your pivot point farther back) you'll absolutely want a slider when towing with a short bed truck. Without it there is a risk of clearance issues including the possibility of your fifth wheel taking out part of your cab. If the gooseneck in your truck is not from B&W we'd just need to know the brand so we can check what options you have. Just email that info to info@hitchweb.com or call 1-800-300-4067 Thank you! -Hitchweb Team

I have an 02 f350 crew cab short bed with the 7.3l diesel. Has a turn over goose neck balk in the bed now. Looking at switching to a 5th wheel hitch. Also looking at a triple axel trailer around 19k-20k lbs. What would be the best hitch to get? Also, have been looking at slider options..are they as strong and reliable?

Hi Wayne, To help select the best hitch we'd need to know your fully loaded trailer weight. Generally a 15 or 16k fifth wheel slider would be a good choice (let us know if you need a higher rating), we have part# 30094 Reese Pro Series 5th wheel and 16516 Curt E16 fifth wheel. Both include a slider and mounting hardware. For the rails in the truck you can use either 30035 (rail kit with universal brackets) or combine 58058 (rail kit without brackets) & 50082 (custom Ford bracket kit - can reduce install time by up to 50%). If you'd like to discuss your options further please contact us at info@hitchweb.com or call us at 1-800-300-4067. Thank you!

Hi Ken, Because your fifth wheel trailer is fairly light and you have a short box truck we would recommend a 15k slider hitch - part# 30094. The rail kit for that fifth wheel is part# 30035 (including universal brackets and hardware). If you'd like to get custom install brackets to help cut down on the install time then instead of the 30035 rail kit you would order part# 58058 (rails only) and part# 50064 (no drill custom bracket kit). If you would like more info or have any other questions please contact us at sales@hitchweb.com and one of our team members would be happy to help you out. Thank you!

Hi colobear - we recommend a slider for any bed that is 6'5ft or less. Because your bed length is so close to that you may still have clearance issues with the cab. You have the option of buying a standard fifth wheel and adding on a slider if you do need the extra space - or - you can also go with a pin box extender or sidewinder in addition to a standard fifth wheel. This will take care of both clearance problems and won't require you leaving the truck to make any slide adjustments. If we can help you with this further please contact us at info@hitchweb.com. Thank you!

Hello Frances, If the gross towing weight that you will be towing once the trailer is fully packed is more than 16,000 lbs. then yes, you will need to upgrade your fifth wheel hitch to a heavier model, such as a 20K

Hi, I recently just purchased a 26ft Starcraft Shimera 5th wheel. I need to mount it to my 08 dodge 1500 mega cab with 6.5ft bed. what would you recommend that i use? All the different hitches available are confusing me on which one i need to safely pull this trailer. I also have holes in my bed of my truck that i hope to reuse for this(previous owner have 5th wheel hitch) so i don't have to re drill new holes. Thanks!

Hello Adam, In order to determine the correct fifth wheel, we need to know a few more things: 1) Do you have anything in the bed of your truck? 2) What is the Gross Weight Rating of your trailer? 3) Do you want the rails to install in the bed of your truck, or under? 4) Do you have a specific brand in mind? Once we hear back from you we can provide a full set up, but for now, here is a link to view all fifth wheel hitches for long box pickup trucks: https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-A-1-1/For-Long-Box-Pickups

Hello BillyBoy The height of the bed off the ground isn't a big concern, but since you have a short box, a slider system is recommended. Please visit this URL to view our short box fifth wheel hitches, or call our team for assistance: https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-A-1-2/For-Short-Box-Pickups

Hello Mr. Ward Before we can provide a correct fifth wheel, can you confirm what size bed you have on that vehicle? If you have a flat deck, your options are: Part #GNRK1500 B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Flat Deck, link below https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-B-1-B/Under-Bed-Gooseneck-Hitches Or part #BFW0001 Binkley Mini Fifth Wheel, link below https://www.hitchweb.com/product/88/BFW0001/Binkley-Mini-Fifth-Wheel If you do not have a flat deck, please contact our team with your bed size so we can provide you with more options. Hello Rick, We can recommend the Curt 16K E5 5th Wheel that includes the rails part #16116. This is a 16,000 lbs. hitch that mounts in the bed of your truck. The rails are "above bed" rails, not below. https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-A-1-2/For-Short-Box-Pickups As you did not specify the size of your Ford Super Duty, we have included a link to the custom bracket kit for a Ford F150 / F250 SD part #16441 https://www.hitchweb.com/category/HD-A-2-2B/Fully-Custom-Install-Kits This is everything you would need to complete your set up.

Hello Paul,

Before we can help you, we need some more information:
1) Do you already have a 5th Wheel
2) Do you have rails? If so, are they factory or aftermarket? If they are aftermarket, what brand / bolt pattern are they?
3) What capacity are you looking for?

Thank you
